Dear Families,
The 2022-23 school year marks my 27th year in education and 5th in Jeffco Public Schools. As an educator, it was always my goal to ensure that all students learned at high levels. Throughout my career, I have learned what it means to be an educator, to worry about my students and to hope every day that I was making a difference. More than that, I loved the connections I made with students and families. Somewhere along the way, my experiences and beliefs about education called me to be an educational leader. I have had the opportunity to lead at the district and school levels. My love for being part of a school community and being a school principal at the elementary level is what brings me to Westgate Elementary. I am so excited to be a part of the community and work with all stakeholders to ensure that every student has an extraordinary school experience. I want to take this opportunity to tell you more about my beliefs as an educator and leader.
I believe in every child who walks through our doors, no matter what. This matters in education. I will never give up on a student and I will work relentlessly to support them in their learning journey.
I believe in relationships. It is important for every student who walks through our doors to connect with someone. Not just their peers, but also a caring adult who believes in them, views them as a unique individual, and empowers them to reach their highest potential. In order to build relationships and connect with our students, you will often see me in the halls, in the classrooms and talking with students.
I believe in collaborative learning. I know I am not always the expert and it takes multiple talents to grow our students. I am committed to the growth of people, and I nurture a school culture of collective learning and efficacy. I have learned that leadership is about being present for people and building a community of learning. This supports developing engaging and rigorous learning experiences for students. I will commit to giving our staff the structures, support and space so they feel supported and can be their best for students.
I believe in shared leadership. I believe in a collective vision and I believe that a relentless focus on student growth is critical. I view the school staff and families as partners who work to lead, learn and grow together for the success of the school community. I believe every role within an organization is important, from the classified staff, to the students, teachers, parents and community volunteers. I will work hard to establish trust and respect with all stakeholders and I will pay attention to your concerns and questions. I will model for our students what it means to work together, to share ideas, to make decisions, to reach consensus and at times, respectfully disagree.
I feel blessed to be an educator and to be the principal at Westgate Elementary. Together we will make a difference in the lives of our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Valerie Calvert
Principal
